Early Life
Frederick George Cole was born in 1891 and was living with his parents Alfred, a farmer, and his mother Emma (née Roberts) at 17, West Street, Abbotskerswell.
The 1891 census indicates Alfred was born in South Brent and Emma in Christow, where Frederick was also born. In 1901 he was helping out on Ruby Farm in Abbotskerswell with his father and had 2 siblings Lily and Reginald. In 1911 the family moved to Bishopsteignton and were living at Humber Cottages.
Military Experience
Frederick registered with the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment, Service No 9132 as a private.
Death and Burial
Frederick was killed in action in the fields of Flanders, France on 31st October 1916 aged 25 years. There is some discrepancy over his age as his headstone and paperwork at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission indicates he was 27 years old but as his parents were deceased at the time of verification it seems likely that this is just an error. His grave is registered at the London Cemetery and Extension in Longueval,[1] Departement of the Somme, Picardie, France. Plot 9. H. 42 Memorial ID 56491743.[2]
