Bishopsteignton Festival

We loved meeting all you who came to see us on the village green in June!

2023 has seen another hugely successful village festival for Bishopsteignton, entirely organised by local volunteers for local people! With fantastic musical talent showcased on multiple stages, crafts, groups and organisations represented and school workshops conducted, this year’s festival will definitely have created memories for many.

We were lucky enough to share a gazebo with the brilliant Twinning Association, whose history you can read about here: Twinning – La Roche Maurice. We set up our stall with a selection of display panels from recent past exhibitions from Remembrance to our most recent exhibition: Philip Coombe: Building a Legacy

We also had original archive material and facsimiles on display for you to come and see a part of the village’s archive collection up close. This included one of the amazing Women’s Institute Scrapbooks which were created by the group specially for the former Museum and showcase excellent photography in and around the village and tell stories we otherwise have no record of!

We even enjoyed the opportunity to give a workshop for some of the local school’s pupils which you can read more about in the ‘Outreach and Collaborations’ section below. So many of you visited our stall and we are grateful to each and every one! Some faces we knew well and others we had never met but all were equally enthusiastic about the history of our special village: our unique inheritance.

Here’s a video that sums up the main festival day on June 18th – super weather, lots of people enjoying such a great range of activities, displays and more! Even the re-enactors had a great time!

Keeping you informed…

… the local, sustainable way!

A joint venture between the Parish Council, our local sustainability group ‘Sustainable Bishop‘ and ourselves, these new boards were designed by a local graphic designer Darren of Chez Designs and made of recycled or sustainably sourced materials! You can find one at the village green on Cockhaven close and the other at the cemetery on Lindridge road.

Women’s History research

The project continues to piece together the story of the Modern Wives

In the last newsletter we celebrated volunteer Natalia’s brilliant achievements with publishing posters and online articles exploring the history of notable Bishopsteignton women as well as starting her research into the unique Bishopsteignton Modern Wives.

Since then she has successfully interviewed 2 former members of this amazing group and collected their ‘Oral Histories’ for future generations to enjoy and learn from! While research continues, you can start reading and listening to these stories here: Bishopsteignton Modern Wives.

Outreach and collaboration

The Hub team recently gave two successful and engaging talks to the Primary School children Years 5 and 6 on how to research people and places in Bishopsteignton using our own website and various other websites available to them.  The children learnt new skills to help them in their quest to obtain information and discover the past in Bishopsteignton for our next meeting in October.  Watch this space for the children’s projects!

The festival was very successful for collaboration as well, beginning with a village history tour on the Friday of with the school children which was followed by lots of conversations with families at the festival while we looked at village maps on display.  A few of you found it interesting seeing what the area around your home looked like before it was built and as a result, we even had some photos sent in showing the construction of some newer houses!
